(The Post News)- The University of the Free State United Nations Chapter hosts the third Kovsies Model United Nations (KMUN) summit in three consecutive years. The 3-day summit that aims at shaping the future of diplomacy and leadership in young minds commenced on Friday, 15 August and concluded on Sunday, 17 August.
The event brought together students from various institutions across South Africa, including the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Goldfields TVET College and more. Students who convened at UFS Bloemfontein campus, represented different countries and conducted rigorous research into the challenges faced by their representative nations and the progress in solving them.
In an interview Monde Buthu, Deputy Chairperson the United Nations Association of South Africa UFS Chapter, stated that the topic of the summit is, “Accelerating sustainable future: Youth leadership in advancing the SDGs.” He added that the summit aims to provide a platform for students representing various universities and colleges to meet and discuss on pressing global issues.
“This also serves as an opportunity for participants to engage in rigorous debates,” Buthu said.
When asked, how was the summit he said, “Despite the postponements we had the summit was a fruitful success. Remember that the summit was suppose to have taken place on the 25th of July and 27 July. We had to change that date because of some circumstances faced by the organisation.”
According to Buthu they had to change the dates to 15 August till 17 August. Which really assisted them in planning the summit ahead of time and making sure that everything was in order before the event started.
The summit’s keynote address delivered by Director, International Coordination Chief Directorate, United Nations Political, Peace and Security Malibongwe Mcakakuvana. He emphasized the role of young people in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He encouraged young minds to collaborate and be active observers of pressing global issues that affect their future.
KMUN in statement extended their heartfelt gratitude to all the delegates, guest speakers, and observers for participating.
