(The Post News)– On Tuesday, a Durban University of Technology (DUT) student fell from a building and died. The student was reportedly frustrated by being defunded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) took his life.
Reports indicate that the student jumped from the 5th floor of the university’s Steve Biko campus and died instantly after hitting the ground. According to KZN VIP Protection Services spokesperson Gareth Naidoo, footage captured by another student at the scene shows the victim flashing a peace sign, smiling, and then jumping to his death. “Authorities are yet to confirm the details,” he added.
DUT confirmed the incident, expressing “deep shock and sorrow” over the student’s death. The university further extended its heartfelt condolences to family, friends, and fellow classmates of the student.
Moreover, counseling support has been made available to students and staff. “We pray for strength and comfort for all who are mourning. May the soul of our dearly departed rest in eternal peace,” DUT stated. The university also confirmed that the police have launched an investigation.
