(ThePostNews)– A principal from Gaunteng was stabbed on Monday while trying to stop a violent clash between learners from two schools.
Learners from West Ridge High School and Hoërskool Roodepoort clashed violently, leading to the Gauteng principal stabbing that shocked the community. Gauteng MEC for Education Matome Chiloane condemned the fight. He said it followed a violent learner clash on Friday, August 15, that circulated widely online.
On Monday, the situation worsened when a group of West Ridge learners allegedly sought revenge. They confronted students at Hoërskool Roodepoort and threw stones at cars. During the clash, the Hoërskool Roodepoort principal was stabbed. She went to the hospital for treatment and has since returned home.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of both learners and teachers, prompting calls from the community for stricter supervision and preventive measures at both schools.
Three Hoërskool Roodepoort learners with serious injuries are receiving medical care. Officials reported that nine learners were involved in the altercations, with three sustaining serious injuries and six facing immediate disciplinary action.
Six Grade 12 Boys Suspended
The Gauteng Department of Education confirmed that six Grade 12 boys from West Ridge High School will face suspension today. The seven-day suspension prevents the students from attending school until their disciplinary committee hearing. Further suspensions may follow as the verification process continues.
The Stabbing Prompted Safety Measures
A wellbeing support team from the Department of Education will visit both schools to provide assistance. Chiloane emphasized that schools must remain safe for learners and educators. He stressed that violence and intimidation have no place in schools and called on authorities to ensure those responsible face consequences.
The Department has coordinated with the SAPS to help both schools improve security and has requested unannounced search-and-seizure operations.
