(The Post News)– The English Premier League (EPL) has named Mohammed ‘Mo’ Salah, Liverpool’s right winger and forward, the EPL Player of the Year for the 2024/25 season .
With this win, Salah broke the cycle for Manchester City players, who have won the Player of the Year Award for consecutive years. The win marks Salah’s third win of the decade, making him the first player in history to win PFA three times.
Salah comes out on top out of Alexander Isak, Bruno Fernandes, Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, and his teammate Alexis Mac Allister. Last season, he led the league in goals with 29 and 18 assists. Moreover, he ended the season as league winner and Carabao Cup runner-up.
This is a recognition of his success and performance for the previous year. He was also touted as a favorite for the Ballon d’Or cup competition. Unfortunately, Liverpool had shortcomings in the Champions League and domestic cups.
In the past, Salah won the award first in the 2017-18 season and again in 2021-22. Liverpool players have bagged the Player of the Yaer Award twice, since its introduction in 1974.
The last time Liverpool won the league, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne won the Player of the Year Award. For the first time, Salah has won both the Premier League and Player of the Year Award simultaneously.
Stars like De Bruyne, Thierry Henry, Gareth Bale, Mark Hughes, and Cristiano Ronaldo won this award only twice. They cannot lay claim for the third time; only Salah has stretched the record with his third win. De Bruyne and Ronaldo were the last to win the PFA twice. Furthermore, Salah was named in the EPL 2024/25 squad along with other teammates Virgil van Dijk, Allister, and Ryan Gravenberch.
