(The Post News)– Springbok veteran Willie le Roux has withdrawn from Saturday’s Rugby Championship clash against Australia in Cape Town after owning up to a slight injury niggle. The decision means he misses the chance to play in front of family and friends in his home province.
Assistant coach Mzwandile Stick praised Le Roux for putting the team first, saying his honesty showed great character. With the Boks opting for a 6/2 split on the bench, carrying an outside back not fully fit would have been a risky call. Stick admitted it was a big loss but backed Aphelele Fassi, who comes in as a late replacement.
Captain Jesse Kriel also showed faith in Fassi, pointing out that the Sharks fullback has been learning closely from Le Roux and has the talent to step up on the big stage. While disappointed for Le Roux, Kriel believes Fassi will grab the opportunity.
The coaches and players agreed that the late switch hasn’t disrupted preparations. Stick said the Boks have been working on improving game management after overplaying in last week’s 38-22 defeat. Kriel added that the team is eager to bounce back and correct those mistakes in Cape Town.
