(The Post News)– Mamelodi Sundowns has opened talks with Qatar SC for battling Lucas Rebeiro Costa. This follows Ribeiro escalating contractual complications to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Football Tribunal.
Ribeiro reportedly filed his resignation with Sundowns early August 1. He believes Sundowns sabotaged his career, denying him a move to Europe. He claims Sundowns does not allow him to go to his future employer, withholding his FIFA certificate.
As per FAR Post, Sundowns rejected a R61 million bid for Ribeiro, causing Ribeiro to resign, citing “the club is unreasonable.” Additionally, Sundowns bought Rebeiro for approximately 50 million. They showcased his talent since 2023.
However, the player is putting his leg down and taking Sundowns to the FIFA Tribunal. He is the first footballer to benefit from the Lassana Diarra rule against FIFA.
FIFA demonstrates that its rules do not impede players’ movement with the amended Lassana Diarra rule. Rebeiro’s lawyer, Jean Louis Dupont, stated that Qatar SC made an offer that is far above Rebeiro’s value.
Dupont said, “Mamelodi Sundowns attempted to drive the price up again and again. Without looking at the players’ interest.” Ribeiro is willing to leave Sundowns for Qatar SC.
Ribeiro’s contract is set to expire in 2028. But his termination gives him a right to defend his interest at the FIFA Tribunal. Ribeiro stated that he will consider what is best for his career. “My next employers will not be involved in the dispute between me and Sundowns,” said Ribeiro.
The player has had a shining career at Mamelodi Sundowns, winning back-to-back Premiership Soccer League (PSL) titles. Being the runner-up for the CAF Champions and winning the goal of the tournament at the Club World Cup.
He beat the likes of Lionel Messi at the Club World Cup with a moment of brilliance and bravery towards the goal. His stellar performance drew interest from European clubs that are interested in his services.
Qatar SC is the club leading the negotiations to acquire the services of the Brazilian-born player. Sundowns has just won a case against their former coach Pitso Mosimane. Now, they are losing against Ribeiro Costa.
