Fenerbahçe have officially parted ways with head coach José Mourinho, marking the end of the Portuguese manager’s short spell in Turkey. The decision was confirmed by the club on Saturday, just days after Fenerbahçe failed to secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 season.
The 61-year-old Mourinho, ex-Fenerbahçe coach joined the Istanbul giants with the promise of European success, leaves after less than a year in charge.
The split comes as a direct consequence of Fenerbahçe’s failure to book their spot in Europe’s most prestigious competition (UEFA Champions League). The club’s hierarchy reportedly lost patience after the team fell short in the Champions League qualifying rounds, a competition that had been Mourinho’s primary target.
While the Yellow Canaries remain a strong contender in the Turkish Super Lig. The board believes a fresh direction is necessary to achieve their long-term European ambitions.
During his brief tenure, Mourinho guided Fenerbahçe to a strong domestic campaign, keeping them competitive against rivals Galatasaray and Beşiktaş. However, the early Champions League exit overshadowed his achievements.
Mourhino managed 28 matches at Fenerbahçe winning 17 with six draws, and five losses. Despite his tactical expertise, Mourinho struggled to adapt to the pace and demands of Turkish football. Where expectations are both immediate and unforgiving.
The club is now actively searching for a new head coach who can restore European hopes. Rumors suggest that several names are being considered, including young attack-minded managers with proven success in continental competitions.
Its board has assured fans that the next appointment will prioritize both domestic glory and a return to the Champions League group stage.
For Mourinho, this marks yet another short-lived chapter in a storied career that has seen him coach at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and AS Roma.
Given his experience, it is almost certain that Europe’s elite clubs will continue to monitor his availability. Speculation already links him with possible jobs in Portugal, Saudi Arabia, and even a return to the Premier League.
The decision for Fenerbahçe to part ways with José Mourinho is a significant shake-up in Turkish football. While the Champions League failure was the tipping point, it highlights the growing ambitions of the Istanbul side.
