(The Post News)- Motorists in South Africa can look forward to slightly lower fuel prices in September. As month-end data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) points to a possible 4-cent drop per liter for 95 petrol, while diesel drivers are expected to benefit from even greater relief.
Expected Fuel Reduction
The data indicates an over-recovery for both petrol and diesel by month’s end, confirming a price reduction at the pumps on Wednesday, 3 September 2025. This over-recovery driven by the rand and global oil prices was measured at between 4 and 12 cents per liter for petrol and around 55 cents per liter for diesel.
CEF released a statement indicating that at the end of the month, projections point to a decrease across all major fuel types. “Petrol 93 is expected to drop by 12 cents per liter, while Petrol 95 should see a smaller decrease of 4 cents per liter. Wholesale prices for both Diesel 0.05% and Diesel 0.005% are forecast to fall by 55 cents per liter each, and illuminating paraffin is projected to decline by 37 cents per liter,” reads the statement.
Although the reduction in fuel prices is relatively small, it marks a shift from the sluggish recovery seen earlier in the month. Importantly, the rand, which initially contributed to an under-recovery, strengthened against the US dollar over the course of the month, ultimately supporting an over-recovery.
