(The Post News)- The Limpopo Department of Transport has confirmed that five people died and two others were injured in a devastating car crash early on Saturday along the N1 near Ysterberg Mountain, within the Polokwane Municipality in the Capricorn District.
Preliminary investiation indicates that that the accident occurred when two sedans collided head-on and they caught fire and the victimes got burnt.
Department spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said the crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning when two sedans collided head-on and burst into flames, resulting in the deaths of five people, four of whom were burned beyond recognition. While the two injured, a driver and a passenger, were taken to a nearby hospital.
“Reports indicate that one of the vehicles attempted to overtake. Although the South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating, recklessness cannot be ruled out,” Chuene said.
Limpopo MEC Mathye expresses deepest condolences
Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Susani Violet Mathye, extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. “We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, and we wish the injured a swift and full recovery,” Mathye said.
Mathye also called on motorists to practice greater patience and caution on the roads. “As the political head, I am deeply concerned about these accidents, which appear to be caused by reckless driving,” she stated.
She highlighted the department’s growing concern over the recent spike in crashes along the Ysterberg Mountain route, attributing many of them to poor visibility during the early morning and late evening hours.
“We are committed to doing everything possible to reduce and prevent such incidents,” Mathye added.
