(The Post News)- Two people got shot and killed on Monday afternoon during a shootout between suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers and a private security company in Dawn Park, Ekurhuleni.
Police officials confirmed that the incident heppended when suspects attacked a cash van, detonating the vehicle before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.
“Two fatalities have been confirmed at the scene following an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and the security company. At this stage, the identities of the deceased have not been released as investigations are ongoing,” said the police spokesperson at the scene.
Thandi Mokoena, a eyewithness described the scene as chaotic. “I was driving to Windmill Park when I heard loud bangs and people screaming. Then I saw men with rifles shooting at the cash van. Everyone was running for cover; it was terrifying.”
“The robbers blew up the van. Smoke was everywhere, and within minutes they were gone with the money. After they fled the scene, vehicles and close by residents stopped by to pick up the remaining loot,” she added.
Police confirmed that the suspects managed to escape in white unknown vehicle. With them they had stolen cash and left the damaged security vehicle behind.
According to the police they have opened a case of robbery and inquest. The investigation is underway, and no arrests have been made at this point.
Residents of Dawn Park are urged to stay indoors and lock all gates as the robbers are reportedly still at large.
