(The Post News)- Al Ahly, the powerhouse of Egyptian football, has parted ways with Spanish coach Jose Riveiro. This is following a 2-0 defeat to Pyramids FC during the Cairo Derby.
Moroccan midfielder Walid El Karti struck in both halves to secure a dominant victory for CAF Champions League holders Pyramids FC, dropping Al Ahly to 13th place in the 21-team Egyptian Premier League after five rounds.
Jose Riveiro’s Coaching Career Before Al Ahly
Riverio moved from Finland to South Africa in 2022 and quickly made an impact at the helm of the renowned Soweto-based club, Orlando Pirates. Over the course of three seasons, he guided the team to an impressive five knockout competition victories, solidifying his reputation as a tactically astute coach. His tenure with the Buccaneers came to an end when his contract expired in May, marking the close of a successful chapter with one of South Africa’s most storied clubs.
Shortly after his departure, Al Ahly, the most successful club in African football history with a record 12 CAF Champions League titles, appointed him as head coach. However, his stint with the Egyptian giants proved challenging. Despite high expectations, he struggled to find form with the team, managing to secure just one win from seven competitive fixtures during his brief time in charge. The coach further said, “I need additional time with the players so they can better understand my ideas,” after losing to Pyramid.
