(The Post News)- Former Limpopo premier Chupu Mathabatha has resigned from his position as the ANC’s provincial chairperson with immediate effect.
Mathabatha resigns over misconduct and unethical practices
According to a leaked letter dated September 1, 2025. Mathabatha informed ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula of his resignation. In the letter, he points to misconduct and widespread unethical practices linked to the Vhembe and Waterberg regional conferences as the reasons behind his abrupt decision to step down.
“This decision is motivated by the concerning misconduct and lack of ANC values that I have observed within the organisation in the province, particularly in relation to the processes towards and conduct within the conference of the Vhembe and Waterberg regions,” Mathabatha stated in the letter.
Mathabatha explained that to safeguard his reputation and integrity, he could not ignore the unethical conduct and un-ANC practices taking place under his leadership. He added that he remains open to discussing these matters further with the ANC’s national office bearers at their convenience and is willing to attend any interviews. In the meantime, he has chosen to step aside to allow the organisation to operate without his involvement.
“In order to uphold my reputation and integrity, I cannot stand aloof to such unethical and un- ANC tendencies occurring under my leadership. I always stand available to deliberate these issues further with the National Office Bearers of the ANC at their convenience and make myself available for any interviews.
“Until then, I will resign to allow the organisation to function without my involvement,” reads the letter
His resignation comes nearly two months after the 68-year-old, currently serving as Deputy Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development, joined many young men at initiation schools (Komeng) to undergo the process into manhood.
Mathabatha was among hundreds of initiates at the Mathabatha initiation school in Tjiane village, near his home in Tooseng, Ga-Mphahlele, in the Capricorn District. However, he was absent from the graduation ceremony, disappointing many who had eagerly anticipated celebrating his transition
