(The Post News)- Renowned entrepreneur and Soweto Gold Beer founder Ndumiso Madlala has died at 46 due to liver failure. He pioneered South Africa’s first black-owned craft beer brand and was celebrated for his passion for brewing and uplifting his community.
Ndumiso Madlala’s family confirmed that he was living with the condition for the last three years. Madlala will be laid to rest at his family homestead in KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday, September 6.
Madlala made history in 2013 as the pioneering businessman and visionary behind Soweto Gold, South Africa’s first black-owned craft beer brand. His work not only reshaped the local brewing industry but also played a vital role in promoting township entrepreneurship.
Ndumiso was one of seven children and the fourth born in the family. Ndumiso pursued his studies at the University of Natal after completing school, where he chose chemical engineering, inspired by his love for numbers and innovative thinking.
“He had a remarkable memory and a natural love for numbers. He pursued chemical engineering and later completed his master’s degree at the University of Twente in the Netherlands,” he said. After returning to South Africa, Madlala applied his knowledge and passion to brewing, a journey that culminated in the launch of Soweto Gold Beer.
“I remember our conversations when he was starting out. He said he wanted the brewery to be in Soweto because he wanted to remain close to the people,” stated Phakama.
He added, “We were so proud of him then, and we still are. Beyond building a successful brand, he gave back generously, starting businesses at home, creating jobs, and even providing houses for those in need.”
Phakama added that the family will greatly miss his commitment to education, his drive, and his devotion to uplifting the community.
