(The Post News)- Five people died when the taxi they were travelling in overturned on the N1 North freeway in Midrand, near the Mall of Africa.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) reported that the incident occurred between the Buccleuch Interchange and Allandale Road. Xolani Fihla, spokesperson for the JMPD, warned drivers about significant traffic delays caused by road closures in the area.
“Emergency services and law enforcement officials are currently on the scene. The accident has resulted in multiple injuries and, tragically, five confirmed fatalities. The far-right lane is currently affected, and traffic is severely backed up. A full closure of the freeway will be necessary shortly to allow for the proper processing of the scene and recovery operations,” said Fihla.
Motorists Advised to Look Out for Overturned Taxi
Motorists were urged to be patient. “Drivers should anticipate significant delays in both directions on the N1 freeway. The JMPD strongly recommends avoiding this stretch of the freeway and taking alternative routes. Motorists are advised to remain patient and drive carefully,” he added.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety and the vulnerability of minibus taxis on South Africa’s highways.
