Tshidi Madia Honored at Her Memorial Service
Earlier this week, colleagues, friends, and family gathered at a memorial service in her honor. Madia has been remembered as a fearless, committed, and passionate journalist who left a lasting mark on the profession. Tshidi’s sister, Reabetjoe Mokoko, highlighted that this is a personal loss that has deeply shaken the family. “I wasn’t raised by my mother; I was raised by Tshidi’s mother. We grew up together as siblings. That is why this loss is so big. She wasn’t just my sister; she was my best friend in life. The 27th of August will never be the same,” she said.
Reabetjoe viewed Tshidi as a guiding angel in her life. “Part of who I am today is because of her. She pushed me, she held me accountable, and she made sure I never settled for less. I’ll forever be grateful to have grown up with her. “Her death was painful, but it was also extraordinary. Even in death, God made sure she shone not just for South Africa, but for the world,” Mokoko said.
EWN editor-in-chief, Nisa Allie, paid tribute to Madia, describing her as a powerhouse in both journalism and leadership. “As a leader, she was fearless at every level and earned great respect for it. I used to smile when she sent emails in pink font, but more recently she was using phrases like ‘strategic objectives’ in her pitches. It was half a joke, half a reflection of her stepping into her ever-evolving power,” Allie said.
Allie added that Tshidi was constantly pushing herself for the better. “As if hosting shows and reporting the news wasn’t enough, she had recently gone back to study. I afterward told her that I was in awe of her. Future Tshidi would have been so proud of all she achieved,” she said.
Tshidi’s death has created a profound loss in South African journalism. Celebrated for her fearless commitment to uncovering the truth, her kindness, and her unwavering dedication to both her profession and her country, she leaves behind a powerful legacy that will continue to inspire for years to come.
