(The Post News) -Former diva’s wrestling champion AJ Lee stunned the WWE Universe on Friday night by making her return to the wrestling stage after a decade away. The crowd of more than 10 000 inside Chicago’s Allstate Arena erupted as Lee appeared and joined her husband, fellow WWE star CM Punk, on SmackDown.
True to form, AJ Lee made her entrance in her trademark Chuck Taylors, skipping down the ramp before beating up Becky Lynch. The fight between Lynch and Lee happened after Lynch slapped Punk while defending her husband, World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins. Punk, refusing to retaliate, grabbed a mic and declared, “I don’t hit women… but I know someone who does.” Enter AJ Lee, who stormed the ring seconds later.
AJ Lee had hung up her boots after an injury that left her with three herniated discs in her cervical spine, ending a four-year tenure on the main roster. Her signature look, unpredictable persona, and sharp in-ring skills made her one of the standout Divas Champions of the 2010s. However, her comeback once seemed unlikely because of her injury and her criticism of Stephanie McMahon and WWE’s treatment of the women’s division in 2015.
For fans who follow WWE, her return had been widely anticipated ever since CM Punk came back to the company two years ago. Punk is currently in a storyline with Seth Rollins where Lynch backs her husband by berating Punk and even slapping him at one point. Fans recalled Punk’s earlier warning to Lynch that she would “regret putting her hands on him,” fueling anticipation for this very moment.
This widely anticipated yet shocking return set social media ablaze with fans celebrating the comeback of one of WWE’s most beloved icons. Speculation is already swirling about whether the company is planning a full-time in-ring return or a limited storyline run alongside CM Punk.
