(The Post News)– Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, Minister of the Presidency, has approved the Sports Department’s request to host the Formula One Grand Prix in Kyalami, Johannesburg. Kyalami received confirmation from the F1 federation to upgrade its circuit to grade one status, which is the highest international standard required to host F1 races.
At the media briefing on Friday, Ntshavheni announced that the bid to host the event will be for three years, starting in 2027. “The mere granting of an opportunity for South Africa to bid for the prestigious Formula One Grand Prix is an affirmation of South Africa as an important world actor and confidence in the country,” she said.
she continued to add that the bid is fully financially supported by the South African private sector, and if it’s successful, they will continue to create jobs and economic development.
Kyalami: Formula One design
British firm Apex Circuit Design was commissioned last year to develop the upgrade plans needed for Kyalami to secure a Grade 1 license, the standard required to host Formula One. FIA grading is based on the kilogram-to-horsepower ratio, with F1 cars having the lowest ratio of all motorsport categories, making it the most demanding certification to obtain.
In June, Kyalami’s owner, Toby Venter, revealed that the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) had approved the proposed upgrades. The circuit was also granted a three-year period to complete the necessary changes in order to stage its first F1 race since 1993.
