(The Post News) – A day after a drone fired by Yemen’s Houthi rebels hit Ramon Airport on Sunday, Israel’s military confirmed that another Houthi drone had been intercepted while targeting the airport.
The military reported on Monday that alarms were sounded in the Negev region, located approximately 126 km from Ramon Airport, after a Houthi drone, launched from Yemen, entered Israeli airspace. The Times of Israel confirms that the Israeli Air Force successfully intercepted the drone, so there have been no injuries or damage reported.
Houthi Drone Attack Prompts Short Airport Closure
On Sunday, the initial Houthi drones made contact with the airport, damaging windows and injuring one person. Due to the limited damage, the airport was closed for only a few hours before returning to full operations. The Houthi group later confirmed that the drone attack was theirs. The Houthi-controlled Yemeni Armed Forces also issued a statement warning, “The airports inside occupied Palestine are not safe and will be continuously targeted.”
These latest strikes follow the death of Houthi Prime Minister Ahmad Ghaleb al-Rahwi, the foreign minister, the minister for security affairs, and 9 other senior officials in an Israeli airstrike on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa. Yemen remains divided, governed by two rival authorities. The Houthis have long opposed Israel and maintain alliances with factions opposing the country, the most prevalent one being Iran.
The pair have exchanged attacks since the beginning of the war in Gaza. However, tensions have escalated following the killing of the Houthi prime minister, with Israel targeting Houthi-controlled areas and the Houthis vowing to avenge their leaders.
