(The Post News)– South African music sensation Tyla added another accolade to her career, winning the Best Afrobeats award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards.
This marks her second consecutive win in the category, making her the first artist to achieve back-to-back victories since the award’s inception. Tyla claimed the Moonman trophy for her hit “Push 2 Start,” a follow-up to her global breakthrough track “Water,” which earned her the same award in 2024. Held at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, the ceremony celebrated some of the biggest names in music, but Tyla carved out her space in the spotlight with poise and style.
The 22-year-old made a bold fashion statement on the red carpet, arriving in a vintage beige Chanel mini-dress from the brand’s 1993 Spring Collection. Originally worn by supermodel Claudia Schiffer, the dress turned heads once again as Tyla brought it back to life with her signature flair. She completed the look with gold medallion chains around her neck, wrists, and waist, courtesy of Pandora, reinforcing her status as both a music and fashion icon.
Speaking after her win, Tyla expressed both gratitude and excitement. “I’m very excited. The competition was tough,” she said. “Shout-out to all the nominees, shout-out to Africa and my team. It’s just a blessing to be here winning another award.”
Tyla Nominated Among Africa’s Greatest Artists
Tyla beat out a stacked list of fellow African stars, including Tems, Burna Boy, Rema, and Wizkid, proving once again that she’s a leading force in the global Afrobeats movement. Her sound continues to bridge continents, and her growing popularity shows no signs of slowing.
When asked about her next project, Tyla offered a quick teaser that sparked buzz among fans. “It’s coming, and it’s coming in hot. Like, for real, just keep an eye out,” she said with a smile, hinting that her next album could be on the horizon.
While Tyla celebrated another milestone, the night saw Lady Gaga emerge as the evening’s most awarded artist, taking home four Moonman trophies. She won Best Direction and Best Art Direction for her visually arresting single “Abracadabra,” along with Best Collaboration for “Die With a Smile,” her duet with Bruno Mars. Gaga also received the Artist of the Year award, cementing her continued dominance across genres and formats.
Other major winners included Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter, who both walked away with three awards each, tying for second-most wins of the night. Rising star Doechii also made her mark, claiming Best Hip Hop and Best Choreography for her worldwide hit “Anxiety.”
The VMAs also took time to honor legacy artists. Mariah Carey received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award for her legendary contributions to the music industry. Busta Rhymes was presented with the Rock the Bells Visionary Award, while Ricky Martin earned the Latin Icon Award, celebrating decades of influence across Latin and pop music.
The performances were equally star-studded. Tate McRae delivered a standout set during her first-ever main stage performance at the MTV VMAs. She lit up the stage with “Sports Car” and “Revolving Door,” dancing barefoot in sand and showcasing her dynamic choreography and emotional depth.
Mariah Carey took the audience on a nostalgic journey with a performance medley that included “Sugar Sweet,” “Fantasy,” “We Belong Together,” and “Obsessed,” giving fans a reminder of why she remains an icon.
Other acts included performances from Ricky Martin, Lady Gaga, and high-energy DJ sets from global names like DJ Snake, ensuring a night full of celebration, artistry, and unforgettable moments.
With her second Moonman in hand and a new album on the way, Tyla continues to ascend as one of Africa’s most influential musical exports, proving that her reign in the Afrobeats world is far from over.
