(The Post News)- Orlando Pirates coach Ouaddou noted that the Buccaneers will face Stellenbosch even as most of their squad only rejoined training this week after representing Bafana Bafana in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria.
Before the international break, Pirates built strong momentum with a 3-0 win over Chippa United. However, that energy took a hit when Ouaddou and several members of his technical team were involved in a road accident while returning from Gqeberha. The coach, who is still recovering and has one arm in a sling, will be on the sidelines leading his side in Saturday’s final.
Ouaddou: Pirates Is Ready to Defend Title
Speaking on Tuesday, Ouaddou made it clear that the team remains focused on defending their title. “This final means a lot to the club and to our supporters. Everyone knows how important this match is, and we’ve been preparing with full focus,” he said.
Ouaddou praised Stellenbosch’s consistency and professionalism, calling them a team with a clear vision and strong leadership. “They’ve shown their quality over the years. Just because we beat them once this season doesn’t mean we can afford to be complacent. This is a final, and any team that reaches this stage deserves respect,” he added.
Despite still processing the emotional aftermath of the accident, Ouaddou expressed gratitude to be part of such a significant occasion. “I feel emotional not just because of the final but because I’m here and able to lead my team,” he said. “I thank the hospital staff who made sure I recovered enough to be on the bench this weekend.”
He emphasized that the team would not take this match lightly, especially with the chance to win the MTN8 title for an unprecedented fourth consecutive time. “We’re approaching this with the same professionalism as always. We’re analyzing our opponents, identifying areas to exploit, and improving on what didn’t work in our previous match against them,” he explained.
On the squad front, Ouaddou provided updates on key players. Midfielder of the Season Makhehlene Makhaula is close to returning after a long injury layoff, but the coach plans to manage his comeback carefully. Meanwhile, Patrick Maswanganyi has recovered and will be available for selection.
“It’s always encouraging to welcome back players who’ve contributed so much to the club,” Ouaddou said. “The more options we have, the better for the team. Maswanganyi trained well, and the medical team cleared him, so it looks like his injury wasn’t serious.”
As he wrapped up his remarks, Ouaddou warned against underestimating the occasion. “This final won’t be easy, but we’ll be ready,” he said.
