(The Post News)- Three children were killed and eleven others injured after a school taxi crashed into Senzokuhle Crèche and Primary School in Imbali, Pietermaritzburg, on Thursday morning.
According to KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service (KZPA), the accident occurred when the minibus lost control and veered into the Crèche building. The crash happened shortly before 8am along the T6 road.
KZPA spokesperson Craig Botha said he described the scene as devastating. “A taxi had lost control, veered off the road, and collided with the crèche building. Paramedics rendered immediate medical attention to the patients. Tragically, three children, aged between nine and eleven years old, were declared dead at the scene,” Botha said.
The injured children, all aged between nine and fifteen, sustained varying injuries. “Two were in critical condition, while nine others were seriously injured,” he added. Emergency personnel worked for hours to stabilize the children before transporting them to nearby hospitals.
MEC Siboniso Duma Visits the Creche
MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, expressed his condolences to the families and said his department had acted immediately. “I have assigned a team from my office and the department to visit the scene of the accident and the families of the affected children. His department will provide more details on the matter after speaking to the families and relevant healthcare professionals. He said that they sympathize with the parents of the impacted children.
KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service also extended its sympathy and commended the response teams. “KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service expresses its deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident. We commend the bravery and professionalism of our paramedics who worked tirelessly under incredibly difficult circumstances.”
Reports indicate that parents, teachers, and community members are gathered outside the school in shock and grief.
