(The Post News) – Mfuleni new police station is finally becoming a reality after a major breakthrough between the national police ministry and the City of Cape Town. This development marks an important step in addressing the long-standing call for stronger safety measures in the community.
Mfuleni new police station to improve safety and visibility
During recent high-level discussions, the City agreed to make 380 square metres of municipal office space immediately available for police use. In addition, land has been earmarked next to the site for the construction of a fully equipped facility in the near future. As a result, residents will no longer need to rely solely on the Blue Downs station, which is far from their neighbourhood.
This progress follows a series of meetings where government leaders listened to concerns raised directly by residents. For years, the absence of a local police base has been a critical issue in Mfuleni. The rapid population growth, combined with rising safety challenges, made the need for a solution urgent. With the Mfuleni new police station now on the way, the community is set to experience improved visibility and quicker response times from law enforcement.
Furthermore, the City will lease the space to the South African Police Service (SAPS) under a cost-sharing arrangement. SAPS will only be responsible for essential utilities such as water and electricity, ensuring that resources can be directed toward policing operations. This cooperative approach shows how different levels of government can work together to strengthen community safety.
Mfuleni new police station backed by strong partnerships
Although the exact range of services at the interim site is still being finalised, the presence of the Mfuleni new police station will immediately boost confidence. More officers will be visible in the area, helping to deter crime and rebuild trust between residents and the police. Transitioning from dependence on Blue Downs to a local station represents a significant milestone for the community.
Commenting on the initiative, Professor Cachalia emphasised the importance of collaboration, saying: “I commend the Mayor and the City of Cape Town for this demonstration of cooperative governance in action. It is through such practical and responsive partnerships that we will begin to rebuild trust between communities and law enforcement.”
He further stressed the urgency of tackling crime, adding: “The fight against crime requires urgency, coordination, and accountability. Most importantly, it requires that we listen to the communities and act on the concerns they raise.”
In addition, the collaboration between the City of Cape Town, the Department of Public Works, and SAPS highlights the value of joint action in tackling crime. By providing infrastructure and support, local government is ensuring that national police efforts are backed by practical resources. The Mfuleni new police station is not only a building; it is also a symbol of a stronger partnership focused on safety and accountability.
Ultimately, this project demonstrates that when authorities and communities work together, lasting change is possible. For Mfuleni residents, the promise of a dedicated police station signals hope, progress, and a safer future.
