(The Post News) – UK Prime Minister (PM) Keir Starmer was spotted supporting his favourite team at a soccer match on Saturday, while more than 1,000 police officers are deployed across central London to manage the massive crowds attending the rival “Unite the King” and “March Against Fascism” demonstrations.
It has been a week of political pressure and tensions in London, which are expected to culminate in the two protests which are both heading towards Whitehall. Within this week, the PM has pressured to fire the US ambassador Lord Mandelson after emails were found revealing him supporting and coaching sexual offender Jeffrey Epstein after his arrest. This was not long after Deputy PM Angela Rayner resigned after revealing that she evaded tax when buying her apartment.
Amid the criticism of his cabinet and the vetting process, the PM has been photographed at an Arsenal versus Nottingham Forest match, while 500 additional police officers have been called in to support the 1 100 Metro police officers in London. Starmer, a longtime Arsenal fan, faced scrutiny over accepting free tickets valued at £35,000.
PM Starmer Remains Silent as Protests Sweep London
Starmer has yet to comment on the marches which have gathered thousands. Aeriel photographs revealed over 110,000 people in attendance at the anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim activist Tommy Robinson-led “Unite the King” march. The far-right conservative Robinson said the march will also honour fellow conservative Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot on Wednesday.
Robinson had said the rally is ““UK’s biggest free speech festival.”, focusing on challenging the powers in charge. This has proven to be true as crowds chanted “Keir Starmer is a wanker” and “f*** you Starmer” while moving from Stamford to Whitehall.
The “March Against Fascism,” organized by Stand Up To Racism, is expected to conclude at the northern end of the same hall, where speakers and MPs will be lined up. Around 5,000 counter-protesters are marching to oppose the far-right demonstration.
