(The Post News) – The Ukraine Air Force reported that they shot down 137 Russian drones and a ballistic missile in an overnight attack on September 13. The latest strike coincides with the annual Yalta European Strategy (YES) conference, which was attended by 13 European officials.
As reported by the Kyiv Independent, Russia launched 164 drones across Ukraine’s north, south, east, and center. While 27 strikes were reported at nine locations, the Ukraine Air Force noted that there were no injuries or fatalities.
The last airstrike was reported on 9 September in a village in eastern Donetsk. The attack resulted in 19 people injured and killed 24 elderly residents. On September 7, the same outlet reported that Russia had carried out a record-breaking 810 drone attacks against Ukraine since the conflict began three years ago.
That figure does not include the Donetsk village strike or the recent drone incident that breached Poland’s airspace, prompting Warsaw to shoot down three Russian drones. The incursion led Poland to invoke Article 4 of the NATO treaty, a move intended to consult allies and prevent possible Russian retaliation.
The event escalated tensions among EU members, with many insisting the breach was deliberate. It also reignited debate on whether to trigger Article 5, which states that an armed attack against one NATO member “shall be considered an attack against them all.”
The YES conference, running from September 12 to 14, placed the drone escalation high on the agenda. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who offered Poland Ukrainian expertise in drone defense systems, missile training, and consultation. Both leaders agreed to cooperate in developing a joint defense framework.
Officials from France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy were also in attendance, where discussions largely focused on security measures and strategies to pressure Russia into accepting a ceasefire.
