(The Post News)– Former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton has been honoured with tributes from fans and fellow sports figures following his death.
His body was found at his home in Manchester on Sunday. Hatton, 46, won 45 of his 48 professional bouts across an esteemed 15-year career and last fought professionally in 2012. During his celebrated career, he faced boxing greats Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao and secured a defining win against Kostya Tszyu.
Manchester City Saddened to Learn of Hatton’s Passing
Hatton was well-known as a Manchester City fan. The football club said they were devastated to learn about his death. “Ricky was one of City’s most loved and revered supporters, who will always be remembered for a glittering boxing career that saw him win world titles at welterweight and light-welterweight. Everyone at the Club would like to send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time,” the club said on X.On Sunday before the Premier League match against Manchester United at Etihad Stadium, the club held a minute’s appreciation—applause, cheers, and songs.
Meanwhile, Mexican former boxer Marco Antonio Barrera Tapia shared, X: “Ricky was a once-in-a-lifetime man. I am eternally grateful I got to share the ring with him. May he rest in peace; he will be missed deeply. He was my closest friend. I’ll miss you, my friend. There will only be one Ricky Hatton”.
Hatton’s younger brother and former boxer Matthew posted, X: “I love you, Richard. See you on the other side.” Former heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury wrote on Instagram, “RIP to the legend Ricky Hatton. There will only ever be one Ricky Hatton. Can’t believe this—so young.”
The World Boxing Association said his legacy would “live on in every fight and in the hearts of boxing fans around the world,” describing him as a “true champion, an indomitable spirit, and a legend of the sport.” The boxing legend retired in 2011 but made a comeback in 2012, where he was beaten by Vyacheslav Senchenko. He was due to make a comeback later this year.
