(The Post News) – At least 20 learners were left seriously injured after a minibus taxi transporting them plunged off the KwaKhetha bridge along the P127 road near Impendle in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
According to reports, the vehicle, which was carrying pupils from various schools in the area, veered off the road and fell several metres from the bridge.
This marks the third accident involving learner transport in the Umgungundlovu District within just five days. On Thursday, three learners lost their lives in a separate incident, while several others remain in hospital.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya confirmed that the taxi driver fled the scene after the crash, and law enforcement authorities are now searching for him.
“What is most concerning is that the driver ran away after the incident, and police are working to track him down. Learners from Matomela High School, Luthando High School, and Sthunjwana Primary School have been transported to Gomane Clinic and Harry Gwala Regional Hospital (Edendale Hospital) for treatment. We are also calling on the South African National Taxi Council in KwaZulu-Natal to urgently convene to address these recurring accidents involving taxi associations,” Sibiya said.
