(The Post News) – The City of Tshwane has cut electricity supply to the Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) main campus, citing millions of rand in unpaid bills.
Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane, Dr Nasiphi Moya confirmed on Monday that the power disconnection was carried out after repeated attempts to recover the debt failed. “TUT main campus owes the City of Tshwane R5,8 million for electricity. We’ve disconnected electricity for the institution,” stated Moya on post on X(Twitter).
She added, “We have engaged the institution on several occasions, but they have failed to honour their payment obligations. As a result, the city had no choice but to switch off supply,”
The disconnection has sparked concern among students and staff, with many warning that it could disrupt academic activities, especially in the middle of the semester.
TUT Student Representative Council (SRC) members criticised the move, saying learners should not be punished for the university’s financial troubles. “Cutting off electricity at a learning institution affects classes, research and students living on campus. This is unacceptable,” an SRC representative said.
