(The Post News) – Regional officials in Ukraine reported on September 16 that seven people were killed and 49 others injured in the latest wave of Russian drone airstrikes.
Ukraine’s Air Force announced that it intercepted 89 Shahed-type drones, though 22 managed to break through defenses, striking targets in six regions. According to local outlet Kyiv Independent, the areas hit included Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kyiv oblasts.
Zaporizhzhia Oblast suffered some of the worst damage, with two people killed and 18 injured, including two children. The strikes destroyed 10 apartment buildings and 12 houses.
Resident Oleksii described the aftermath of the attack, recalling how a powerful explosion shattered his windows and set his neighbor’s home on fire. “I was so worried about them,” he said, noting that he rushed to help extinguish the fire.
The latest attack comes just a week after a Russian drone incursion over Poland raised alarm across Europe.
Zelensky Speaks Out on the Russian Drone Attack
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a statement on Telegram urging European leaders to help establish a “multilayered air defense system” to protect the continent. He revealed that Russia has launched more than “3,500 drones, 2,500 heavy glide bombs, and nearly 200 missiles” against Ukraine over the past two weeks.
The president stressed that these relentless attacks have destroyed critical infrastructure and caused widespread blackouts, many of which the country is still working to repair. He argued that the scale of the assaults; combined with the recent Russian drone incursion in Poland; should be reason enough for Europe to invest its advanced technologies in collective air defense.
