(The Post News)- On a night they will want to forget, Kaizer Chiefs suffered their first Betway Premiership defeat of the season, 3:1 to Sekhukhune United at FNB Stadium on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
As the second half commenced, Grobler struck again just five minutes into it, restoring Sekhukhune’s advantage, making the score 2:1. Thabang Monare then added a third to put the result beyond doubt, leaving Kaizer Chiefs chasing shadows despite their dominance on the ball.
Kaizer Chiefs Coach Confirms The Hard Pill
Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson admitted the result was hard to swallow given the performance. “We had the possession, we had the chances, but we were not clinical. Football is about goals, not statistics, and tonight we were punished for our mistakes,” Johnson said.
The numbers painted a different picture than the scoreboard. Kaizer Chiefs registered 16 shots compared to Sekhukhune’s six, enjoyed 64% possession, and completed 507 passes against their opponents’ 300. Yet the visitors walked away with all three points and returned to the top of the table with 16 points from six matches.
Some fans expressed frustration at what they see as a recurring pattern. “It feels like déjà vu. We dominate, but one mistake at the back and suddenly we’re chasing the game. This is how we lost our way in previous seasons,” said a Chiefs supporter. The 3:1 loss leaves Chiefs in third place with 13 points from six games, trailing champions Mamelodi Sundowns (14 points) and Sekhukhune.
