(The Post News)– The Trump administration is escalating its fight against left-wing groups, with the president announcing Thursday that the anti-fascism movement Antifa will be designated as a “major terrorist organization.”
Trump announced this newest development on the Truth Social platform. He blasted Antifa as a “SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER,” adding that he will be calling for a full legal probe into the funders of the movement.
The move against the movement, which opposes a variation of conservative white supremacist ideologies, follows an earlier warning made by Trump. At the Oval Office on Monday, Trump said he was looking into bringing racketeering charges against radical left-wing groups and their financial backers.
He also warned that liberal nonprofit organizations could face the loss of their tax-exempt privileges. Former senior Justice Department official Mary McCord said she strongly doubts Antifa could legally be designated a terrorist organization, noting it would raise major First Amendment issues. However, state authorities could still flag the movement in domestic terror threat assessments.
Since Charlie Kirk’s death, republican and conservative powers have been persistent in cracking down on opposing movements, opinions, and groups, citing fears of growing left-wing violence. Earlier this week, the Trump administration requested a $58 million security increase to protect executive and judicial personnel.
Furthermore, Jimmy Kimmel Live! has been suspended after the host suggested that Trump’s Make America Great Again supporters were attempting to distance Kirk’s alleged killer from the right wing in order to “score political points.” Critics argue that some of these measures risk creating a pretext for censorship and silencing political opposition.
