(The Post News) – Marcus Rashford became the headline at St James’ Park, after scoring a brace leading FC Barcelona to a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in their Champions League group-stage opener.
From the first whistle, both teams had equal ball possession. Just 25 minutes in the game, Anthony Elanga carved open Barcelona’s defense with a blistering run down the right. His pinpoint low cross found Barnes unmarked, but the winger could only rattle the side-netting.
The breakthrough came in the 58th minute. Jules Koundé whipped in a cross from the right with venom. Rashford peeled off Schar and soared, meeting it with the kind of header strikers dream about. Nick Pope could only watch as the ball nestled in the net. Rashford wheeled away, arms wide, a smile stretched across his face. His first goal for Barcelona, and it was here, on one of football’s most hostile stages.
Nine minutes later, the England international produced a moment of pure magic. Rashford picked up the ball on the edge of the box. One touch, then a rocket. It dipped, it swerved, it cannoned in off the underside of the bar. It was a strike of stunning audacity, the kind that lives in highlight reels forever.
Newcastle got a change through Callum Wilson, but it was too little, too late. Barcelona was in control, they’re strategic attacks were unmatched for Newcastle.
The final whistle confirmed a 2-1 victory for Barcelona, with Rashford stealing the headlines. Two goals, a statement made. For Barcelona, a night to remember.
