(The Post News) – Less than a month before Cameroon’s presidential elections begin, Brenda Biya, daughter of current President Paul Biya, has publicly urged citizens not to re-elect her father for an eighth term.
In a since-deleted viral TikTok video circulating on social media, the 27-year-old French-speaking daughter is translated saying that “Do Not Vote for Paul Biya” and “I hoped there would be another president”. According to a translation from Africa News, she also accuses her family of mistreating her, which led her to cut ties with her parents.
Brenda, who splits her time between the United States and Switzerland, has often been a controversial figure in Cameroon. Last year, she publicly came out as a lesbian, drawing both support and backlash in a country where homosexuality remains illegal and carries a prison sentence of up to five years.
The president’s administration has yet to comment on the allegations.
Cameroon’s Upcoming Presidential Election
Meanwhile, at 92-year-old President Paul Biya is the oldest serving and the longest serving president in the world. Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni follows as the second longest-serving leader in Africa.
Despite already ruling for 43 years, Biya is once again on the ballot, seeking an eighth term against six other candidates, including top contenders Bello Bouba Maigari, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, and Cabral Libii. Analysts note that while the political climate in Cameroon is desperate for change, the large numbers of smaller parties, instead of a unified opposition, are likely to weaken their chances.
Cameroon’s presidential elections are scheduled for the 12th of October 2025.
