(The Post news) – A hospital security breach has emerged in Lydenburg; this comes after Rose Mnisi, a 39-year-old who works as a hospital cleaner, was arrested on Wednesday in Extension 2, Mashishing, after allegedly being found with human placentas.
Hospital Security Breach Raises Serious Safety Questions
This unusual discovery is now prompting concerns over how she gained access to sensitive medical waste, and the concerns about potential black-market trade further highlight the hospital’s security breach.
According to the South African Police Service media statement, authorities received a tip-off during their patrol routine that Mnisi was attempting to sell the placentas.
Mnisi was hitchhiking to Nelspruit when officers from the Lydenburg K9 Unit intercepted her along Voortrekker Street, finding a plastic bag containing human placentas, which led to her arrest.
Mnisi appeared in Mashishing District Court charged with illegal possession of human tissues, and authorities say they are still looking into the case and could add more charges later. She is scheduled to appear in court again on September 25 to ask for bail. Acting Mpumalanga police commissioner Maj-Gen Zeph Mkhwanazi expressed concern about the incident.
Mkhwanazi has since described the incident as serious, saying it highlights the need for stronger security measures in hospitals and a continued partnership with the community to prevent such crimes, reinforcing the issue of hospital security breaches.
