(The Post News)- This coming Saturday, Quan Horn will captain the Lions in the Currie Cup final facing the Griquas at Ellis Park, marking a significant turning point in his profession. At a critical juncture, the powerful Springbok fullback assumes the captain role, guiding a team packed with skills, determination, and belief.
Horn takes over as captain because usual captain PJ Botha is injured and cannot play throughout the final. The Lions have looked on Horn’s composed conduct, strategic skills, and Springbok heritage to lead them during one of their most crucial games of the season in Botha’s unavailability.
Due to his mature and reliable fullback performances, the 22-year-old has already established himself as one of South African rugby’s brightest young talents. Now, his rising prominence inside the Lions setup is further enhanced by his position of captaincy.
Asenathi Ntlabakanye, a Springbok prop who accepts the vice captain’s title despite still being charged with doping, joins him in a joint leadership role. Although Ntlabakanye’s off-field circumstances have received notice, head coach Mziwakhe Nkosi has stated that he is fully confident in the player’s psychological and physical preparedness for performance on the pitch.
Nkosi remarked, “Quan is a player who leads by example. The group pays attention when he talks, even if he doesn’t say much. The team respects him not only because he is a Springbok but also because of his dedication to the team, work ethic, and ability to make decisions under duress.”
The time was appropriate for Horn to assume a more significant leadership position, Nkosi continued, particularly as the squad gained enthusiasm following their 67-19 defeat by the Boland Cavaliers in last week’s semi-final.
The Lions’ conviction in preserving unity and focus in the face of outside distractions is demonstrated by Ntlabakanye’s presence in both the starting eleven and the leadership group.
Horn’s first captaincy comes as the Lions are getting ready for both the forthcoming United Rugby Championship (URC) season and the Currie Cup final. His development as an experienced athlete and potential Bok leader may be significantly aided by this chance to lead at the home level.
