(The Post News) – About 374 Volkswagen cars made in South Africa between 10 January 2025 and 12 June 2025 have been recalled due to possible loss of braking assistance, The National Consumer Commission (NCC) confirmed on Friday.
VW of South Africa has informed NCC that these vehicles are being recalled due to the possible loss of braking assistance that may be caused by the electromechanical brake servo control unit. “ The braking system remains functional but requires additional effort when applying brakes. If the issue manifests whilst the vehicle is in motion, it will require increased braking distance”.
Consumers affected were urged to take their vehicles to any VW Commercial approved dealership for assessment at no cost to the customer. The NCC reminded consumers that product recalls were vital to ensure the safety of products in the marketplace and prompt action was essential.
In a separate incident, Mercedes-Benz South Africa Limited is also recalling 102 of its vehicles. The NCC said the recall affected four EQE-295 models and 98 GLC-254 models, which were available from 2022 to 2025 and distributed across the country. According to Mercedes-Benz, the bolting of the steering coupling might not meet specifications. In this case, the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and steering rack might loosen over time. As a result of the defect, this might lead to a loss of the vehicle’s steerability, increasing the risk of an accident.
Consumers of the affected vehicles were advised to contact any Mercedes-Benz authorised dealership for a check and a replacement or repair of the affected component.
