(The Post News)- A 26–year-old man from Ottawa was arrested for allegedly threatening Steven Morrissey, a British musician. Morrissey was supposed to perform at a an event in Ottawa this week; however, he has cancelled the performance.
The man was later freed on bail by the authorities. Morrissey proceeded with his Ottawa concert as planned despite the danger. He eventually withdrew from two U.S. performances, though, one in Connecticut and one in Boston, Massachusetts, expressing security problems.
Internationally remembered for being the former leader of the legendary rock music group The Smiths, Morrissey departed the band in 1987 to pursue a lucrative solo profession. He has gained notoriety throughout the years for voicing strong opinions on everything from politics to the protection of animals.
He has previously taken a strong stance on a Canadian topic. He declined to do a tour in Canada in 2006 in opposition to the yearly seal hunt there.
The Boston location confirmed the decision in an Instagram statement. “In recent days, there has been a credible threat on Morrissey’s life. Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of both the artist and the band, tomorrow’s engagement at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway has been cancelled.”
He has not yet confirmed whether he would reschedule the cancelled gigs.
