(The Post News) – The former uMzimkhulu municipal manager, Zweliphansi Sikhosana, accused of ordering the hit on Sindiso Magaqa, the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) secretary-general, has been denied bail. The court ruled that his release will not be in the interest of justice.
The 55-year-old man is charged with the murder of Magaqa; he has been in and out of court. He was re-arrested in July for his murder following further investigations by the Political Killings Task Team. A convicted hitman, Sibusiso Ncengwa, implicated him and the late district mayor, Mluleki Ndobe, as the masterminds behind the murder.
In a signed confession, Ncengwa admitted to meticulously planning the shooting with his accomplices. He stated, “We followed the vehicle and waited for an opportunity. When we saw them sitting there, I got out with the rifle… I fired shots at the car to make sure we hit him.” Ncengwa also confessed to torching another vehicle to eliminate evidence.
Magaqa Killers Paid Half a Million
Magaqa, along with colleagues Nontsikelelo Mafa and Jabu Msiya, was shot in the uMzimkhulu area near a spaza shop in July 2017 but only died in September 2017 due to “complications from multiple gunshot wounds.”Mafa and Msiya both survived. Another alleged accomplice, Jabulani Mdunge, who allegedly sprayed them with AK-47 bullets, died in a shootout with police.
More than half a million rand was paid to the assailants for the murder. Magaqa was killed for speaking out against a corruption-riddled tender to construct a local memorial hall, IOL reported.
