(The Post News) – US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may be back in the spotlight, as Kim says he is open to speaking with Trump again. However, he set one clear condition; Washington must stop pressing North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.
Trump and North Korea: Kim Sets His Conditions for Talks
Speaking to lawmakers in Pyongyang, Kim said there was no reason to avoid talks if the U.S let go of what he called its “obsession” with nuclear disarmament. He even mentioned that he still has fond memories of his past meetings with president Trump.
During Trump’s first term, the two leaders met three times to ease tensions. But talks broke down in 2019 over disagreements on sanctions and disarmament. Since then, North Korea has declared itself a nuclear power and continued to expand its weapons program.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung believes renewed dialogue is possible if trust can be rebuilt. He noted that even a freeze on nuclear production would be a meaningful step forward.
But Kim dismissed such phased approaches, accusing the U.S. and South Korea of insincerity and saying their true aim is to weaken his regime.
Despite years of U.N. sanctions, North Korea has steadily advanced its missile and nuclear capabilities. Many observers argue that pressure alone has failed to slow its progress.
Trump and North Korea: Tensions and Regional Challenges
Meanwhile, Kim has deepened ties with China and Russia, appearing alongside President’s Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin in Beijing earlier this month. The growing alliance adds new complexity to the region’s security landscape.
For now, the future of Trump and Kim talks remain uncertain. Kim has left the door ajar but only on terms that Washington may struggle to accept.
