(The Post News) – The Kremlin has found humour in United States President Donald Trump’s comments, reminding him that the Russian army is not as harmless as he suggested. In a surprising turn on Tuesday, Trump criticised the Russian army on social media and declared confidence in Ukraine winning back its land.
After meeting with the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Trump took to his Truth Social Platform to distance himself from Russia. It was an unexpected shift since the US president has remained steadfast in his view that Russia had the upper hand, and advised Ukraine to cede some of its land to negotiate a peace deal.
With Russia’s repeated drone incursions into NATO member states fuelling tensions, support for Ukraine has grown. The European Union (EU) has been condemning Ukrainian attacks but after Nato members, Poland, Russia and Estonia invaded tensions and support for Ukraine are at a new level. They view the incursions as “provocation” and have threatened to use military defence to defend themselves after the latest Estonian incursion.
During a sideline meeting at the UNGA, Trump voiced support for the NATO threat. He expanded on his social media that due to the help of the European Union, Ukraine can “fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form.”. He added that the Russian army looks like a “paper tiger,” due to its years of fighting bringing it no closer to a win. He said, “ a Real Military Power, less than a week to win“.
The Kremlin Responds to Trumps Comments
The following Wednesday, the Kremlin praised Trump’s desire to end the conflict but dismissed him as merely a “businessman” shifting positions to boost U.S. oil and gas sales. According to CNN, the Kremlin suggested a phone call to straighten things out with Washington.
This comes as Trump encouraged the EU to apply more sanctions to Russia at the UNGA but did not mention the US plans to enact phase 2 of its long-threatened sanctions. The US and the EU had also finalised a deal earlier this month that would phase out dependence on Russian fuel. In this deal, EU countries are expected to buy energy products worth $250 billion per year for three years.
The Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov rectified Trump’s tiger comment, saying that “Russia is associated with a bear,”. He then threatened that there are no such things as “paper bears” before going on to highlight Russia’s “resilience” through its economic stability – despite the first wave of sanctions imposed on it.
