(The Post News)- The Department of Education in Eastern Cape has opened a new investigation of sexual abuse against teachers at J.S. Skenjana Senior Secondary School in Dutywa. This follows allegations that some teachers have impregnated learners.
Oyena Mniki, a former learner, said she once witnessed inappropriate behavior of educators at the school toward one of her friends. “I have a friend who was impregnated by the alleged perpetrator in this school, and the child is still there, very much alive,” Mniki said.
Mnike added that it’s almost a decade since she left the school, but such cases are still happening. “It has been happening for decades because I left the school in 2016, and the ill behaviour from the educators still happened. Moreover, SADTU and the Department of Education are very aware of what has been happening. “Parents and also learners did go and report, but nothing has been done. So, we want them to be brought to book and for the perpetrators to account,” adds Mniki.
Minister Condemns Sexual Misconduct Happening in EC
The Minister of Basic Education, Ms. Siviwe Gwarube, condemns the alleged sexual abuse happening at a school in Eastern Cape. Gwarube stated in a statement that the department has moved to protect learners following deeply disturbing reports of alleged sexual abuse in schools in the Eastern Cape and disruptions to teaching and learning by the Dudula movement.
“The minister has taken steps to ensure that the law is enforced, learners are safeguarded, and accountability is demanded from those who abuse their positions of trust or attempt to destabilize schools,” reads the statement.
According to the statement, at St. John’s College, seven educators are accused of sexual abuse of learners, resulting in several pregnancies. “Learners at the school staged protests, demanding accountability and protection for their peers. The Eastern Cape Department of Education has since placed the implicated educators on precautionary suspension pending formal investigation,” said the statement.
Gwarube said At JS Skenjana Senior Secondary School, allegations of sexual harassment have been reported on social media. The minister said the department will not tolerate any form of sexual assault from the educators. “We will not allow predators or disruptors to rob children of their right to safe schooling. Any person who abuses their position of trust will face the full force of the law,” noted Gwarube.
