(The Post News) – A passenger died tragically on one of FlySafair’s recent domestic flights. The airline is providing full support, including expert counselling, to the impacted family, passengers, and employees.
On Monday, September 22, 2025, FlySafair aircraft FA417 (although some previous reports misquoted FA203) was on route from King Shaka International Airport in Durban to Johannesburg when the event happened.
About 40 minutes into the journey, the male traveler experienced a medical issue. Prior to departure, the person was evaluated and deemed fit for travel by King Shaka International Airport’s medical professionals, according to Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer for FlySafair.
Immediate Response and Diversion
When the passenger’s condition worsened while in flight, FlySafair cabin crew acted quickly to offer first aid and start emergency procedures. Among the passengers was a trained medical practitioner who also helped with the rescue operations.
It was not possible to revive the passenger despite everyone’s attempts. Sadly, the person died before the plane could reach Gqeberha (previously Port Elizabeth), where paramedics could treat the situation when it landed.
Counselling and Review
“FlySafair’s crew are trained to respond to in-flight medical emergencies to the best of their ability until professional help is available,” Gordon said. The airline admitted that everyone on board was extremely distressed by the incident, and some travelers shared the harrowing experience on social media.
In light of this, FlySafair has confirmed it is providing extensive support:
- Family Support: Full assistance is being extended to the deceased passenger’s family, respecting their privacy by not releasing the identity of the individual.
- Counselling Services: Professional counselling services have been made available to all passengers and staff affected by the tragedy.
- Internal Review: The airline confirmed the incident would be reviewed internally as standard practice to ensure that any learnings are taken forward.
Impact on Operations
After a few hours of delay, the flight finally resumed its route to Johannesburg after the diversion. To lessen the inconvenience to travelers, FlySafair offered support, such as refreshments and lodging when needed.
