(The Post News)– The Madlanga Commission has implicated the acting head of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), Julius Mkhwanazi, prompting him to take a special leave. Mkwanazi is allegedly connected to the blue lights on businessman Vusi “CAT” Matlala’s vehicles.
The acting chief confirmed in an interview with ENCA that he asked to take a special leave of absence. “I have to fully prepare to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in response to the allegations I am accused of—I want to clear my name,” he said. Mkhwanazi added that he is ready to present his case before the commission.
Meanwhile, the Ekurhuleni Municipality has denied the allegations, citing that all processes followed proper documentation and the law. Reports indicate that the allegations came during the testimony of KZN Police Commissioner Lt-Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi last week, citing that the EMPD chief was of assistance to Matlala in registering his vehicle illegally under the municipality of Ekurhuleni and inserting blue lights in the vehicles. These lights are used by emergency services and law enforcement vehicles only.
Acting Chief Mkhwanazi added that Lt. Gen. Mkhwanazi was misinformed about the allegations. “Everything was done properly and fairly,” he said. Furthermore, he said that he will not resign, highlighting that he is still fit for the office.
