(The Post News) – The South African Prisoners Organisation for Human Rights (SAPOHR) has voiced strong opposition to Pollsmoor Prison’s cell phone blocking, a measure proposed by Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
In a formal communication addressed to Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald, the mayor expressed concerns that inmates are using mobile phones to coordinate criminal activities from inside the prison walls. The initiative is part of a national pilot project to block Pollsmoor Prison cell phones, with implementation expected before the end of the year.
Pollsmoor Prison Among 5 Selected Facilities
Pollsmoor is one of five correctional facilities selected for this project, aimed at curbing illegal communication and protecting communities from prison-linked crime. For example, one incident involved a roads project in Bishop Lavis, which was halted after a contractor received threats of extortion from an inmate connected to organized crime.
Furthermore, Golden Miles Bhudu, representing SAPOHR, argued that the Department of Correctional Services should have addressed this issue earlier by improving legitimate communication channels between inmates and their families. He emphasized the need for proper monitoring and supervision of these communications to prevent misuse.
Additionally, Bhudu warned that while blocking cell phones in Pollsmoor Prison may deter criminal activity, those who attempt to commit crimes using mobile phones within prisons should be aware that technology can expose their actions, potentially leading to serious consequences.
