(The Post News)- The Hawks raided City Power’s headquarters on the southern outskirts of Johannesburg CBD on Thursday, 25 September, as they intensify their high-level investigation about a questionable R67 million contract. Reports indicate that the probe is linked to a purchase order for electricity transformers in 2023. It is believed that the transformers were purchased for R67m, but they were never delivered.
This followed the first Hawks raid on City Power in July, where they started a probe into alleged fraud and corruption at the cash-strapped entity. The Hawks stated that they have commenced a search and seizure amid their ongoing investigation into City Power tenders.
Several Hawks vehicles were spotted at the gates of City Power headquarters to inqure about the R67m purchase order, contract details, and tender files.
City Power Confirms to Co-operate to The Hawks “Visit”
City Power’s spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, stated that the Hawks visited the entity, denying that it was a raid. “It is important to note that these visits are part of the normal course of the investigation, and they are not raids. They may visit from time to time when they require some information, and we have made it clear that they are welcome anytime,” said Mangena.
He also confirmed that City Power will cooperate fully to make the investigation a success. “As City Power we have been cooperating since 2024 when the first request for information came through. And we will continue to cooperate with the work of the Hawks to ensure that they get to the bottom of whatever they have, and we can clarify the issues where they need clarity,” Mangena stated. He further said that no items were seized in the “visit.”
