(The Post News)- South Africa’s suspended head of Crime Intelligence, Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo, is set to take the stand at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Monday, 29 September.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi described Khumalo’s testimony as providing “every piece of evidence” amid allegations of political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system. His appearance follows the explosive testimonies of both Mkhwanazi and National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, who suggested Khumalo’s July arrest was linked to efforts to weaken anti-corruption operations within the police.
Mkhwanazi said the Head of Crime Intelligence was prepared to disclose key information. “General Khumalo, he will come to the Madlanga Commission with all the evidence,” Mkhwanazi told the commission.
Khumalo Charged with Corruption and Fraud
Khumalo was arrested alongside six others by the Independent Directorate Against Corruption on charges of fraud and corruption. He is accused of misrepresenting qualifications in appointing Dineo Mokwele to a senior position tied to controversial property deals. While currently out on bail, he remains suspended from Crime Intelligence.
Mkhwanazi, in his testimony, suggested that the arrest was a targeted move against the unit, including the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Task Team (PKTT) investigating political killings. “These were not random arrests. This was about stopping the work of the PKTT,” Mkhwanazi said.
Chief evidence leader Advocate Terry Motau SC indicated that the suspended head’s testimony could prove critical. “We expect his evidence to strengthen corroborative accounts already before the commission, particularly around claims of political interference,” Motau said.
As the probe delves into what is called the “cancer” of corruption within SAPS, Khumalo’s testimony may prove decisive in redefining the narrative surrounding Crime Intelligence.
