(The Post News)- In a heartbreaking turn of events, thirteen people, including a 7-year-old girl, were killed in a devastating accident involving two trucks and a minibus taxi on the R81 at Ga-Sekgopo between Mooketsi and Polokwane, in Limpopo.
Preliminary reports indicate that the deceased were passengers in a minibus taxi—12 women, a girl aged about 7, and a male minibus taxi driver—returning from a church service in Solomondale to Magoro village outside Giyani. It is alleged that one truck had brake failures, crashing the minibus taxi carrying churchgoers in between the two trucks.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the call and attended to the scene, while the roadway was completely inaccessible to traffic. The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has confirmed that the R81 at Ga-Sekgopo has been reopened to traffic. The department stated that “the R81 at Ga-Sekgopo has reopened after a crash involving 2 trucks & a taxi. Motorists are advised to proceed with caution. The exact cause of the crash is under investigation.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) urges motorists and public transport drivers to practice caution and improve their behaviour and put safety first. “R81 was closed for several hours as emergency personnel worked tirelessly to remove bodies from the wreckage,” said the RTMC.
