(The Post News) – The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has sanctioned the South African Football Association (SAFA) for playing an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena in Bafana Bafana’s game against Lesotho played in March, in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers where Bafana won 3-0.

The ruling that has dire consequences for Bafana Bafana, deducting three points from the team. The ruling means now South Africa is sitting on the second place with Benin on the top of the group with equal points but differ in goal difference.
The team needs to collect the six points left from the two matches that they still have in hand, one with Zimbabwe on the 10 October and with Rwanda. In order for Bafana to qualify, Benin need to lose their match against Nigeria on the 14 October.
SAFA has also been ordered to pay a fine of nearly R216,466 to FIFA, while Mokoena has been issued with a warning.
