(The Post News) – People living in Cape Town should get ready for a heatwave on Tuesday, 30 September. Weather experts say that temperatures will rise sharply across the Western Cape, including the city and nearby areas.
The City’s safety teams have shared that the heat could reach the upper 20 and even go into the 30-degree Celsius range. This kind of heatwave can be tough on the body and may also affect the environment.
How to Stay Safe During the Heatwave
To stay safe during the heatwave, officials suggest staying inside during the hottest hours, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding heavy outdoor activities.
Additionally, they advise against drinking alcohol and remind everyone to look out for children, older people, pets, and anyone with health problems.
According to the South African Medical Journal, extreme heat can lead to dehydration, heatstroke, and worsen chronic illnesses such as asthma and heart disease especially among children, older adults, and people with pre-existing conditions.
City teams are keeping a close eye on the situation and are ready to work with other departments if needed.
Moreover, with dry conditions and very high temperatures expected, experts warn that the heatwave could raise the risk of wildfires, particularly in areas with dry grass, bush, or strong winds.
If anyone sees an emergency or needs help, they should call the City’s 24-hour emergency line at 021 480 7700.
