(The Post News)- Day eight of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria delivered explosive testimony from embattled Crime Intelligence boss Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo, who made a direct connection between politically motivated contract killings and corruption.
Khumalo Connects Political Killings to Corruption
Khumalo reported to the commission that investigations by the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team consistently point to fraud and corruption as the main motives behind the murders of politically motivated killings. “In most cases where political office-bearers are attacked or killed, it will mainly be for fraud or corruption,” stated Khumalo.
Khumalo said the KZN Political Killings Task Team is successful because of its analysis-led investigative approach. According to Khumalo, investigators first establish the motive and then identify the suspects. “The contract killing has permanent stakeholders that must be there. It will be the replacement of a spotter by a name identified as a person of interest,” he said.
Khumalo’s testimony before the commission comes as he is also facing charges of fraud and corruption following his arrest by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption.
Khumalo Reveals Details of the Big Five
He continued to provide more information on a sophisticated, organized criminal syndicate, labelled the “Big Five.” He claimed that the syndicate is based in Gauteng and is active across multiple criminal sectors, including drug trafficking, hijackings, tender fraud, and contract killings.
Khumalo placed Katiso “KT” Molefe and Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala at the lower end of the Big Five, alleging that far more dangerous underworld figures are part of the syndicate. “The Big Five has already penetrated the political sphere. There are documented cases of high-profile connections in politics, with senior politicians alleged to be complicit or willfully blind to the syndicate’s operations,” he told the commission.
In his testimony, Khumalo added that Brown Mogotsi has been involved in funding the police minister and the ANC. “He appears to have been involved in funding activities for the Minister of Police within the ANC,” he said.
