(The Post News) – The body of Nkosinathi Emmanuel “Nathi” Mthethwa, South Africa’s ambassador to France, was found outside a hotel in Paris one day after he was reported missing.
The 58-year-old seasoned diplomat and politician was discovered in the Porte Maillot district near the Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile. Mthethwa allegedly fell from the 22nd floor of the hotel, according to sources in the local French media. Although local police have not yet formally confirmed the facts surrounding his death, French and South African authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Ambassador Mthethwa was formally reported missing on Monday night, raising concern among staff members.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation stated that it is aware of the reports surrounding Mthethwa’s death and will release a statement in due course.
Meanwhile, the minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola, said that Mthethwa’s passing is a loss to SA and to the international diplomatic community. Moreover, the office of President Cyril Ramaphosa has issued a statement expressing condolences to his family, friends, and co-workers, appreciating his steadfast patriotism and dedication to the country.
According to the presidency, Ramaphosa is “saddened” by Mthethwa’s passing. Ramaphosa also conveyed his deepest condolences to Mthethwa’s wife, Ms. Philisiwe Buthelezi, and his family. Additionally, the president explained that during his final term in office, Mthethwa helped strengthen ties between South Africa and the Republic of France, which has benefited people and businesses in both countries and strengthened SA’s cooperation on the global stage.
A Long Political Career
Prior to his diplomatic appointment, he was a long-serving African National Congress member and held a number of important Cabinet roles, making him a well-known figure in South African politics. He was the Minister of Safety and Security from 2008 to 2009 and served as police minister from 2009 to 2014. He was then appointed as Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture from 2019 to 2023 after a Cabinet reshuffle. Prior to that, he served as the Minister of Police.
In February 2024, he was named ambassador of South Africa to the French Embassy. Additionally, Mthethwa was a member of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organizing Committee’s board of directors, which helped lead one of the nation’s most cherished athletic achievements.
As the joint investigation progresses, DIRCO is anticipated to provide more information on the tragedy, including plans for return.
